FALL 2005
SAY CHEESE!
This summer we introduced exciting new technology to our office: digital retinal photography (DRP). The retina is the part of the eye that contains the nerve cells that produce vision. Detailed photographs of the retina give important information about the health of the nerve cells and blood vessels of the retina and can detect certain problems before they affect your vision. Digital retinal photography is a method to obtain high-resolution (finely detailed) photographs of the back of the eye.

DRP can be useful for detecting and documenting the effects of diabetes, glaucoma, macular degeneration and high blood pressure, to name a few conditions. In addition to detecting the early signs of these diseases, DRP can be useful for monitoring the progression and response to treatment of these diseases.

A baseline digital retinal photograph is strongly recommended as part of your initial eye health assessment to allow future comparisons. For those people with active eye conditions such as glaucoma, progressive macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, annual retinal photography is recommended. For those at higher risk of progressive retinal disorders, photography every 1-5 years is recommended. Individuals at low risk with healthy eyes should have surveillance retinal photography every 5-10 years.

GATHERING ON THE GREEN
On June 4, 2005 , the annual “Gathering on the Green” event was held in Wortley Village . The event was a wonderful opportunity for families in the Old South community and beyond to get together for a fun-filled day!
Dr. Bauman and Associates contributed to this event by providing information on our office and eye health as well as children's activities. Our weaving craft was a hit and we kicked off our annual colouring contest with more than 40 entries received! Without a doubt, the highlight of the day was the face painting and about 200 children left the Gathering on the Green with fantastic face painting courtesy of our team.

We all had a great time and we hope to see everyone at the Gathering on the Green next year.
COLOURED CONTACT LENS UPDATE
Contact lenses can not only help you see better, they can help you look better! In fact, people who do not need contact lenses for vision correction may choose to wear tinted contact lenses as a way to change their look.

Tinted contact lenses can allow you to enhance your natural eye colour, or change it altogether.

Three categories of tinted contact lenses are available:
Visibility tinted contact lenses have a pale tint that improves the ability to see the lens during handling. Typically this tint does not change your eye colour.
Enhancement tints highlight your natural eye colour to create a new look. These translucent lenses are best for light-coloured eyes.
Opaque or “cosmetic” tints can change the colour of light or dark eyes. A coloured pattern on the contact lens overlays the natural coloured part of your eye and can completely change your eye colour.

Similar to most non-tinted contact lenses, it is recommended that tinted lenses be replaced on a regular basis, at least monthly, in order to maintain eye health.

A new product, Freshlook Dailies, has just been released. Freshlook Dailies combines the comfort and convenience of a daily disposable lens with the ability to change eye colour! This is a perfect option for those individuals who want to change their eye colour on an occasional basis.

Our office offers a full range of tinted contact lenses. Ask us about the options that are best for you!
