EyeSpy Something is in my eye! What can I do?
• If something gets into your eye, such as sand or dust, do not rub your eye. Wash your eye with water to help get the object out.

• If a ball or fist hits your eye, put cold cloths on your eye for 15 minutes. This will help the swelling go down and the eye won't hurt so much. Go see the eye doctor (optometrist).

• If a small foreign object enters the eye or you have a foreign body sensation, go directly to an optometrist or an emergency room.

• If a chemical, like cleaning fluid, splashes in your eyes wash out your eyes with water for at least 10 minutes. You need to go to the eye doctor or emergency room right away, especially in the case of a strong chemical.

How the Eye Works
Our ability to "see" starts when light reflects off an object at which we are looking and enters the eye. As it enters the eye, the light is unfocused. The first step in seeing is to focus the light rays onto the retina, which is the light sensitive layer found inside the eye. Once the light is focused, it stimulates cells to send millions of electrochemical impulses along the optic nerve to the brain. The portion of the brain at the back of the head interprets the impulses, enabling us to see the object.
