AMO Complete Recall

Dear Contact Lens User

This is to inform you as a recent user of Complete ® contact lens solution there has been a voluntary recall issued from the manufacturing company, Advanced Medical Optics (AMO), for ALL bottles of Complete ® Moisture Plus Multi-purpose solutions.  This recall is based on recent data made available from the US centre for Disease control and prevention (CDC) that indicated there may be an increase in infections of Acanthamoeba, a naturally occurring water-borne organism, with the use of Complete ® Moisture Plus.

Acanthamoeba can cause serious eye infections in contact lens users . Based on the information from the CDC, Dr. Bauman and Dr. Peterson recommend discontinuing the use of Complete ® Moisture Plus contact lens solutions and disposing of all bottles of Complete ® contact lens solutions . It is also recommended to dispose of any lens cases as well as contact lenses that have been used with Complete ® Moisture Plus solutions. AMO can be contacted directly at 1-888-899-9183 for return and replacement instructions.

As an alternative to Complete ® Moisture Plus solutions Dr. Bauman and Dr. Peterson recommend one of the following two solutions. In addition to the manufacturer's instructions for these solutions, we also recommend digital cleaning / rubbing of the lens for 20 seconds per side (using 3 to 4 drops of solution) as part of the cleaning routine.

General recommendations for safe and healthy contact lens wear are available from the American Optometric Association:
• Always wash your hands before handling contact lenses.
• Carefully and regularly clean contact lenses, as directed by your optometrist.
• Store lenses in the proper lens storage case and replace the case at a minimum of every three months. Clean the case after each use, and keep it open and dry between cleanings.
• Use only products recommended by your optometrist to clean and disinfect your lenses. Saline solution and rewetting drops are not designed to disinfect lenses.
• Only fresh solution should be used to clean and store contact lenses. Never reuse old solution. Contact lens solution must be changed according to the manufacturer's recommendations, even if the lenses are not used daily.
• Follow the recommended contact lens replacement schedule prescribed by your optometrist.
• Remove contact lenses before swimming or entering a hot tub.
• See your optometrist for your regularly scheduled contact lens and eye examination.
